One-way backups are a common sight on La Grange Rd as automobile traffic on this heavily travelled highway defers to the frequent passenger and freight trains that roll through town along the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe rail line.
Highways
La Grange is traversed by two major highways: La Grange Rd (US Hwys 45, 20 &12), which runs north-south, and Ogden Ave (US Hwy 34), which runs east-west. The two highways intersect at the northern edge of the central business district, one block north of the Burlington Northern & Santa Fe (BNSF) rail line. Both roads are heavily travelled, especially by morning and afternoon commuters.
Three regional expressways can be accessed by these highways:
The Tri-State Tollway, which connects Wisconsin and Indiana, also serves as a beltway through Chicago's suburbs. It intersects La Grange Rd approximately four miles south of the central business district, and also intersects Ogden Ave approximately two miles west from the same.
Interstate Hwy 55, known locally as the Stevenson Expressway, intersects La Grange Rd approximately three miles south of the central business district. The Stevenson is a favorite choice for drivers heading east towards downtown Chicago. To the west, I-55 passes near Joliet before heading southwest to Illinois' capital city, Springfield, then on to St. Louis.
Interstate Hwy 280, known locally as the Eisenhower Expressway, can be accessed via La Grange Rd by driving north approximately three and one-half miles, during which length the road's name changes to Mannheim Rd. To the east, the Eisenhower provides an alternate route to downtown Chicago. Heading west, I-280 almost immediately divides into Interstate Hwys 88 and 290. The latter provides a direct route to the northwest suburbs and Interstate Hwy 90, while I-88 passes through Oak Brook and Naperville, then on to Aurora, DeKalb and points west.
La Grange/Mannheim Rd also provides a direct route to O'Hare Airport, 13 miles to the north
Ogden Ave also provides an alternate route to and from downtown Chicago for those commuters wishing to avoid the often congested Stevenson and Eisenhower expressways.
